Working to tie the HP 3000 to a growing market segment, Hewlett-Packard
announced it will give away a copy of Open Market's Web Server with every
HP 3000 sold
through May 31.
The promotion is part of HP's "Get on the Net" program, a plan designed to help position the HP 3000 as an alternative Internet and intranet server with high reliability and lower maintenance than Windows NT or Unix servers. HP doesn't mention either of those platforms specifically in its promotion, but stresses the worry-free, business-critical advantages of the 3000.
The promotion delivers a free copy of the regular OpenMarket Web Server software, without the dedicated security features in Secure Web Server. Web Server is list priced as high as $2,700 on the current HP price list. HP owns the rights to market and distribute the MPE/iX version of the software exclusively, after an extensive port project inside the CSY labs. Customers have only been able to order the OpenMarket product for their 3000s through HP. The free copy of Web Server is available for all Series 9x8, 9x9 or 99x systems purchased new or as a box upgrade. Field upgrades are not eligible.
In addition, HP has placed a 60-day free trial of the Web Server on its Jazz Web site hosted at CSY. This Web site, powered by the Open Market software, will have a trial version ready for downloading.
HP is also extending discounts for Web-related solutions to its full customer base through the end of May. A 10 percent discount is available off both OpenMarket solutions through the Get on the Net promotion. Other allied suppliers of Web software are offering a 10 percent discount as a part of the program, including
