Look for a new manufacturing app on 3000s really soon

Just as we were at press with this issue of the Flash we heard of another manufacturing solution being ported to HP 3000s, one of the first genuinely new products for that market segment in many years. Terry Floyd of The Support Group was finishing off the last touches of moving IFS, a well-regarded ERP system in Europe, onto HP 3000 hardware. He’ll be announcing the port at Wednesday’s ERP World meeting, in conjunction with the HP World conference. The complete ERP solution uses the Oracle database as its information engine, and it even includes a Java-based client interface.

Manufacturing has really been a two-horse race for the longest time on 3000 tracks, as eXegeSys revitalized the MM II code and the MK Group extended the enterprise reach of MANMAN. A third solution involving Oracle could motivate some new 3000 sales and give MIS managers a way to preserve existing 3000 platform investments as well. The software arrives from the application stable of Industrial and Financial Systems (IFS), which offers more than 40 manufacturing-oriented software modules. IFS and TSG also plan to support the customer modifications that ERP systems go through to become tailored to your company. Even without the pull of IA-64, there are new applications emerging for HP 3000s – and new apps are an even better barometer of the 3000’s future than support for a new architecture.
