Transact gets new features, and a new advocate

Users of Transact, HP’s fourth generation language still supported for HP 3000s, will be getting Open Transact late this year. It provides the ability to pass database and file IDs to Transact from other languages or from third party packages. In its current version, databases and files must be opened by the main Transact program. Other languages issue the call to Transact via the TL_CALL_TRANSACT procedure, and changes will be required to the SYSTEM and LIST statements in order to use this capability. A bonus from HP is the ability to defer database opens until the first access, a capability that existed in Transact/V but disappeared in Transact/iX. At the same time there will be a version of Transact that supports b-tree indices in IMAGE/SQL.

Transact is one of many HP 3000 products maintained and enhanced at the Software Services Division of HP’s Worldwide Customer Support Organization. Other notables include the COBOL/iX compiler in use at thousands of 3000 sites. SSD’s Heather Goudey announced that Sue Bennett will be taking over advocacy duties at HP for these products starting immediately. Bennett has assumed product manager responsibilities for HP 3000 products including COBOL, RAPID, and QUERY. SSD calls this group its Customer Loyalty team, headed up by Becky Carroll. SSD marketing manager Doug Blackwood said that Bennett “has been managing the PL6D [HP 3000] hotline for my section for nearly two years now. She’s also been championing the PL6D Year 2000 efforts, too. We recently asked Sue to officially rejoin HP as a full-time member of the SSD marketing customer loyalty team.” Bennett’s duties include ongoing development, execution, and communication of product strategies; acting as a liaison between CSY and SSD; and working with HP 3000 customers to make sure platform commitments are met. If you have any notes for her, Bennett’s e-mail address is Susan_C_Bennett@hp.com.
