The HP 3000 division has released a 2.0.3 version of the
Samba/iX file and resource sharing software for beta testing, a patch
to MPE/iX that the HP Response Center will send to customers who
request it. Samba/iX is a suite of programs which allow an HP e3000
to provide service using a Microsoft networking protocol called
Server Message Block (SMB). This product allows the MPE/iX shell
operating system to act as a file and printer server to PC clients,
primarily for Windows NT, 95 and Windows for Workgroups.
Beta patch SMBLX56 enables the 2.0.3 version and runs on
MPE/iX 6.0. It lets sites choose their method of resolution order for
configurable host name resolution order from broadcast, lmhosts, DNS
lookup or WINS. The new release also adds SWAT, a Web-based tool
which can be used remotely to configure the Samba configuration file.
SWAT lets system administrators set parameters, share security, and
modify other features from a browser interface, and has help and
related documentation available online. HP hasnt yet tested the
2.0.3 version against Windows 2000, and it doesnt recommend the
beta test version for production use.
