Ecometry conference will show both migration, MPE enhancement skills

When Ecometry Corp. hosts its 2004 World Conference and Expo June 6-9, the event will include advice about moving away from the HP 3000 as well as many tips for the many e-commerce sites that will remain on the platform through this year. HP’s Alvina Nishimoto will outline platform changing strategies and update HP’s success stories, while MB Foster’s Birket Foster will speak on “Surround Code Migration and Innovation.”

In advice that can apply to all 3000 sites using packaged software applications and headed for migration, Foster’s abstract states that “Ecometry users must consider the surround code: All of the programs, interfaces, scripts, reports, and data extracts that help with the presentation and use of data from the Ecometry application. Each instance requires migrating these surround code processes to the new environment and testing the result. One approach may be to apply a healthy dose of innovation prior to migration. Innovation before migration provides a solution to an existing challenge and makes your user base more productive and informed.”

Even though Ecometry has non-MPE versions of its application ready for migrations, not all of the advice at the conference will be pointed away from the 3000. Jim Dunn of catalog retailer Hammacher Schlemmer will offer “Go the Distance! Extending the Life of Your HP 3000.” Ecometry attendees will learn how to extend the life of their 3000s using Posix, shell scripting, perl, the MPE Apache Web server. Dunn will also show how to extract IMAGE data and format it for open source systems, to load into SQL or Oracle tables.

Registration for 40-plus sessions at the Delray Beach Marriott, including a beach party, barbecue, and three-hour roundtable discussion on migrating to non-MPE systems, costs $1,050. For more details on the conference, visit the show’s Web site at wc2004.ecometry.com.
