ORBiT is offering a tool to help get old backups onto newer media

ORBiT Software (www.orbitsw.com, 800.896.7248), makers of the Backup/3000 product for e3000 backups, has begun to sell the X-OVER utility to help migrate HP 3000 sites away from the old tapes stuck on reel media and aging, cranky DAT cartridges. It copies STORE tapes from one media type to another. It is useful to copy backups on media in danger of deterioration, or to transfer backups from obsolete or outmoded media to more modern supported media. It can also be used to “reverse copy” — in case you have to submit tapes to entities like governments or tax authorities which only accept older media, such as 1600 or 6250 bpi reel tapes. It copies Native Mode, Compatibility Mode, or TurboSTORE-created store tapes from multiple reel 9-track tapes to multiple DDS/DAT, 8mm, or DLT tape cartridges on HP 3000s with MPE/V or MPE/iX. Depending on how much the data has been compressed, X-OVER can transfer multiple tape reels to a single DDS or DLT cartridge, saving space while freshening up your media. X-OVER (pronounced crossover) was designed by Allegro Consultants years ago while that company was working with Bering Systems, and then got a rejuvenation before appearing on ORBiT price list. It reads TurboStore tapes created with Interleave, Compress and Storeset options and adds fast file search, too.
