RSA security en route to 3000

HP has done something to put a secure Web Server in the hands of 3000 customers. HP has engaged the Monterey Software Group, provider of the SAFE/3000 security system for HP 3000s, to port the RSA security library software. “We have signed the contract with RSA,” said CSY’s R&D Internet program manager Alvina Nishimoto. “There will be a port to the HP 3000.”

The BSAFE/SSL-C encryption engine will not actually be bundled with MPE, but once the port is completed, it can be licensed from RSA for use on the 3000. Monterey Software is licensing the technology, and paying a significant royalty, to use the encryption libraries on the 3000.

The port will give HP 3000 customers a toolset to build advanced security into their applications. Monterey will use the toolset to deliver an add-on software module that will work with the Apache Web server. Once the Monterey product becomes available — making Secure Apache a purchased add-on product and not bundled for free with the 3000 operating system — HP will have delivered on its 1997 promise of secure Web services for the HP 3000. Having RSA’s libraries at hand for MPE/iX is significant in the HP 3000’s revival — it shows that while such Internet capabilities can be had from Unix or NT servers attached to 3000s, HP sees value in offering the capabilities in native 3000 versions, too.
