What projects will HP be undertaking for the 3000 in the next year? Saying that IA-64 is a stake in the ground isn’t acceptable.

Winston Prather, CSY R&D manager: Another stake is the ground is growth through vertical markets. One of the reasons why people in this room haven’t seen marketing and advertising efforts is that a lot of our advertising dollars have gone into the vertical market publications, as opposed to the publications that [IT people] would read. If you’re not in the market for a vertical application, you probably haven’t seen a lot of our ads. The plan for the coming year is to add to those vertical markets with more of that kind of advertising. Most of the advertising money went into the verticals, which is why you may not have seen it.

As far as other stakes in the ground, it’s performance capacity, a complete refresh of the product line as well as a continued focus on vertical markets. I’d like Dave and Pam to comment on the shorter term plans.

Dave Wilde, CSY R&D lab section manager: We will have a release that’s due out very late this year or early in 2000 very focused around capacity and scaling. There’s a set of things we are doing in the memory manager, the dispatcher, the Translation Lookaside Buffer handling and a major change most of you know about in the area of large files. In networking, we have active projects in gigabit Ethernet and looking at things like Web-based consoles. In datacenter management, we have projects grouped in the area of storage, enterprise management and high availability.

We are moving to a brand new diagnostic framework called Mesa Diagnostics, another example of keeping up with the rest of HP. We’re making sure we have an investment in the platform that will be sustainable over the long term. In the area of enterprise management, we’re doing a lot with IT Operations and new performance tools. Those are all examples of things that will either be coming out in the next year or two, or are being actively investigated.

Pam Bennett, CSY R&D lab section manager: In the Internet and Interoperability, we’re investigating LDAP, and it will be available later this year. Other areas we’ll be investigating are CORBA and the Internet security area, SSL encryption, and authentication.
