Streamlined SQL access is in beta test this month

Fresh interest in database alternatives to IMAGE/SQL is sparking a new utility for HP 3000 sites from OmniSolutions, as the company prepares SQLLink3000 for full release next month. The software has a mission for the customers sticking with the HP 3000, as well as those evaluating a platform for migration in the future. The product can access remote SQL databases, insert, delete and update records in those databases, run queries and display query results. SQLLink3000 is able to access databases such as NT’s SQL Server from the HP 3000 without writing code, extending the database browser capability that’s been a feature of the OmniSolutions GUI3000 product.

A Windows-based console directs the SQL calls to the databases, while a handful of pieces of software are loaded onto the HP 3000, creating a transaction server that allows database administrators to link into programs on the HP 3000. The software has been tested against Oracle, Access, PostgreSQL and MySQL databases in addition to SQL Server, but creator Pete Vickers of GUI Innovations said it will “run against any database for which there are ADO drivers.” Evaluation copies are available from distributor Gainsborough Software in the UK as well as the OmniSolutions’ Web site.
